Division Q’s first ever season ended today, 2/4/2024, with the #1 Fighting Artichokes (8-1) defeating the #6 Fireballers (4-5) 31-25. Between 70-100 fans attended over the course of the day, which included a half-court shot competition, all-star game, and beginner’s 3v3 match.

Division Q was founded in summer of last year, with the core group of organizers meeting through an existing pick-up group in Northampton. We started meeting in July, working on gathering interest, figuring out the league’s format, and finding gym space. Our goal was to create a semi-competitive rec league for members of the queer community. League play started at the beginning of November, with all games taking place at Mountain View School in Easthampton.

We had eight teams, each with 10-12 players, and our original plan was to have a seven game regular season. However, one week was cancelled due to an outbreak of Covid-19. Referees and scorekeepers were all volunteers. Many friends and family attended games, some bringing homemade signs and banners. Players ranged from folks who had never picked up a basketball to some who played or coached at the college level.
